The New Sounds of A Cappella

7/26/2017

A Cappella music is choral music performed with voice alone, without the use of any form of musical, accompanying instrument.  A Cappella is an Italian term that means “in the manner of the church” or “in the manner of the chapel”, the church being where it originally came into existence. In the early years of the twentieth century, A Cappella earned its popularity with barbershop quartets.  Even though the dawn of radio threatened to put barbershop quartets to rest, the barbershop revival in the 1930s kept the phenomenon growing, and today The Barbershop Harmony Society keeps the love of these popular A Cappella groups alive.

A Cappella singing has come a long way, with the sounds of instruments being added with the use of human voices, and to watch and listen to an A Cappella group performing,  is now one very impressive and captivating experience that is being enjoyed by many, and is becoming very popular as more and more people are coming together in song, with the guidance of some very professional people,  and we get to see and hear them through social media sites such as YouTube and Facebook.

The following is a YouTube video of a 100 voice, A Cappella, choral group known as Perpetuum Jazzile.  They come from the country of Slovenia, and in the video they sing the song called "Africa" and it starts off with them creating the sounds of a thunder storm.  It takes us miles and miles away from barbershop harmony, but ooooh is it nice to listen to
.
To listen to more songs from this fantastic group click on the following link to their YouTube playlist.  This list starts off with a repeat of "Africa", but you can easily move to the next song by selecting from the list on the right:

And then we have an A Cappella group called "Pentatonix" which consists of four men and a girl.  This group made itself popular on a TV A Cappella group, competition show called "The Sing-Off".  They won this competition in the show's third season in 2011 and in this video they perform a medley of Mickael Jackson songs.

To listen to more songs you can click on the following link to their YouTube Playlist, that starts off with their beautiful rendition of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah":
